Shinobicho,
the town where Iga ninja lived

This area came to be called “Shinobicho”, named after the official residence of “Shinobi-no-shu” or Iga ninja, in the early Edo era. Iga ninja usually lived in the surrounding farm villages, however, were stationed in Shinobicho or in Edo (present-day Tokyo) depending on their duties.
The Akaike family residence is a nationally registered tangible cultural property that preserves the essence of the Edo era.
